Antioxidants and Cancer Prevention

Cancer Antioxidants Free Radicals Zinc

Antioxidants include enzymes, vitamins and minerals within your body that capture and destroy harmful free radicals. Your body makes its own free radical devouring enzymes. Antioxidants depend on the availability of trace minerals like zinc, copper and selenium. Your diet supplies the rest of the antioxidants you need. One of the tasks that antioxidants perform in your body, particularly in regard to cancer prevention is that they help knock out free radicals.

Antioxidants that can prevent cancer:

Vitamin A is a powerful free radical scavengers. Not only do they boost the immune system, they also prevent abnormal cell growth and promote healthy cell growth. Sources include broccoli, cruciferous vegetables, carrots and fruit.

Vitamin C Reduces tissue damage responsible for increased presence of free-radicals and disease conditions. It may also prevent the growth of cancer cells. Dietary sources include cruciferous vegetables, cauliflower, citrus fruits and strawberries.

Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant that is similar to vitamin E. It playas vital role in the production of energy within cells, it also stimulates your immune system, and increases circulation which in turn benefits the whole cardiovascular system. CoQ-10 is found in all plants and animals.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin which has eight different types. The most biologically potent form of vitamin E is Alpha-tocopherol, which is a powerful biological antioxidant. You can get it from bread, seeds almonds, breads, and whole grain cereals.

Melatonin is a relatively newly researched antioxidant, and this hormone has been shown to be probably the best free radical scavenger identified so far. Each cell has a nucleus and Melatonin enables damaged cells to repair by protecting the DNA in a cell's nucleus. Melatonin supplements are available.

Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins (OPCs) are naturally present in food. They have the ability to repair and strengthen connective tissue. The strengthen the vascular system and can prevent the build up of toxins. They are contained in grape seed extract and pin bark extract.

Selenium protects blood cells of the heart, lungs, and liver. It also stimulates the production of antibodies to fight infection. Selenium can be taken as a supplement. It is also found in fish, chicken and grains and seeds.
